UNDP-GEF Kura II: Advancing IWRM Across the Kura River Basin

CTA Monthly Note for July 2019

This blog post covers what the UNDP-GEF Kura II Project has accomplished during July 2019 and what are the plans for August 2019

In July we have:

  • Project Steering Committee meeting in Azerbaijan on 8-9 July
  • H20tel training on 2nd July in Tbilisi
  • Submission of PIR for GEF 2019
  • Meeting with leadership of the EUWI+ Project, and Attendance at the National Water Policy Dialog Meeting in Baku
  • The 4th field trip with the Environment Flow study team
  • Training on Environmental Assessment by Tom Stafford for in Azerbaijan and Georgia on 15-16 July and 18-19 July
  • Field visit to Zedazeni brewery near Saguramo in the Aragvi Basin together with Tom Stafford to discuss possibility of involvement of the company in the pollution abatement demonstration project on 19 July
  • Videos on Laboratory sampling in the field and interviews on Lab training
  • Receipt of Draft of Mid Term Evaluation from the Mid-Term Evaluator and distribution to Steering Committee Members for review and comment
  • The training on GIS technologies applied for water management (Block-1) on 29-30 July 2019 in Azerbaijan
  • Meeting with the State Committee on Women, Children and Family Issues in Azerbaijan for cooperation on women's trainings
  • Participation in the Green Climate Fund preparation workshop in Azerbaijan
  • Meeting and presentation to the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Minister of Agriculture, Deputy Director of Amelioration JSC, and Representatives of AzerSu on water assessment for the Kura Basin in Azerbaijan, and development of a report on the comparison between Azerbaijan irrigation practices and those in other countries
  • Recruitment of Project Officer for Azerbaijan PCU
  • Submitted PSC Minutes to Istanbul Regional Hub Quality Assurance for review
  • Finalized Regional report on the transboundary groundwater management by IGRAC
  • Announce the RFQ for the installation of the Groundwater monitoring system on the Alazani (Ganikh)-Iori river basin

In August we will:

  • Field visit to Ruisi and Kakhiti drip irrigation demonstration sites in Georgia
  • Meeting with 'Environment and Development' to discuss upcoming activities of the demonstration project on rational water use in the municipal sector in Gori, Georgia 
  • Finalize contracting the international expert for Industrial and municipal sewage pollution abatement expert
  • Finalize the evaluation of the potential offers to install the groundwater monitoring system in Alazani (Ganikh)-Iori river basin
  • Meeting with Environmental Flow Team to discuss mid-term reports and the last and next field missions
  • Meeting with UNDP Georgia Country Office to brief Kura DRR on Project activities
  • Start the implementation of an economic study for the tariff reform for water delivered by Georgian amelioration to hydropower, fish farms, and industrial uses by the project’s Environmental Economics Expert.
  • Planning for GIS training to be implemented in the first week of September, including meeting with GIS expert in Georgia
  • Coordinating activities for installation of drip irrigation systems in Tsalka, Georgia
  • Identifying an alternative major polluter company in Georgia
  • Recruit two national experts for the Pollution Abatement demo project in each country
  • Procurement of equipment and furniture for training center for raising awareness and holding meetings and trainings on the Drip Irrigation demo project in Saatli, Azerbaijan
  • 5th Environmental flow study filed trip in Azerbaijan
  • Finalization of the Bids for building of the constructed wetland in Shirvan, Azerbaijan and the conclusion of the contract for the selected local company in Azerbaijan
  • Commencement of the peer review process for submitted papers to the Kura River Basin Academic Conference 
  • Share Project Steering Committee Minutes with Project Steering Committee 
  • Recruitment of National Project Communications Experts for Azerbaijan and Georgia
