UNDP-GEF Kura II: Advancing IWRM Across the Kura River Basin

CTA Monthly Note for March & April 2020

This post covers what the UNDP-GEF Kura II Project has accomplished during March 2020 and what are the plans for April 2020

In March 2020 we have:

  • Continued contingency planning and adaptive management
  • Attending EU Water Policy Dialog for Georgia under EUWI+ 5 March in Tbilisi
  • Hiring and onboarding of Georgian National Coordinator – Welcome Maka Julaqidze!
  • Extend the contracts of the national experts to continue data collection for E-flow till end of 2020
  • Conduct the 8th E-Flow Campaign Conducting Environmental Flow Missions in Georgia and Azerbaijan to Aragvi, Elijan Chay and Samkir Chay 6-8 March
  • The regular inspections of the construction works at the Constructed Wetland site in baby Hajigabul Lake in Shirvan, Azerbaijan including installation of lining
  • Developed information video on constructed wetland progress
  • Finalized the Sectoral Pollution Abatement Plans for the main polluting sectors in each country
  • Initiated discussion with NGO ED on virtual learning alternatives for the second phase of the awareness raising campaign in Gori
  • World Water Day video developed in Azerbaijan
  • Secured approval from Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture to proceed with River Restoration in Krtsanisi Park, hired Expert to conduct desk review of site in Georgia, and conducted site visit to Georgian River Restoration to gather information for international expert to assess site suitability
  • Print Kura Box and brochures in English and Brochures into posters design
  • Hiring Concept designer in AZ for Social Marketing Campaign for Water Conservation Awareness
  • Finalize the technical guideline for conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water for National expert comments
  • Finalize the technical report of the GE Amelioration water services tariff
  • Hire international expert to organize the GIS database for the project
  • Receive Report on National Water Strategy and Institutional Structure for Azerbaijan
  • Receive Sectoral Pollution Abatement Plans
  • Receive Draft pre-feasibility study for main hotspot for both countries Poultry Georgia and Laxhman Tannery
  • Receive bids for Hydro-heroes App and Aquaponics and initiate contracting
  • Contracting of artist for Comic books about water management issues

In April 2020 we will:

  • Develop the final report for phase 1 on the E-Flow regime in the pilot sub-basins.
  • Share Finalized and translated Sectoral Pollution Abatement Plans for the main polluting sectors in each country with Ministries
  • Conduct workshop with all concerned stakeholders to present the sectoral pollution abatement plans (Virtually)
  • Video training on H2Otel In progress
  • Finalize the IWRM Academy training participants Database and share with the Ministries and UNDP COs
  • Continue the second phase of the awareness raising campaign in Gori and expand to Azerbaijan based on alternative proposed by NGO ED
  • Finalize the process of hiring AZ NGO IDEA to host the Aquaponic Farming training center
  • Undertake the RFQ for the purchase and installation of the Aquaponic Farming system
  • Finalize the procurement to select the AZ to develop the Hydro-Heroes Mobile App.
  • videos and photos to be sent by farmers in lieu of site visit to all drip irrigation sites to prepare for the new season 
  • Finalize the development of the Pollution Abatement Plan and Economic Cost Benefit Analysis for Lachin Tannery, set for translation for MENR Approval
  • Finalize the development of the Pollution Abatement Plan for Poultry Georgia and Economic Cost Benefit Analysis set for translation for MEPA Approval
  • Finalize plans with the GE Wild Life Agency to implement the River restoration project and review the design of the measures for river restoration in GE Develop technical report on the new River restoration project in GE
  • Finalize the RFQ to construct the pumping stations and intakes for filling the lakes and finalize RFQ to purchase the solar panel system
  • Print Kura Box and brochures brochures into posters design in Azerbaijani for distribution post quarantine 
  • Updating webpage and populating in all languages and Opened Project YouTube Channel (kura-river.org)
  • Hiring Concept designer in GE
  • Hosting virtual Art Exhibition for display during Earth Day
  • Comic book about water management under development
  • National expert comments and translation to national languages
  • International Expert for GIS will develop the interface for the GIS database to be contracted and to begin work
  • Begin Organization and plans host the project SC in June 2020 10 -12 June virtually
  • Starting online course development for all 3 language for Kura Box teacher training in lieu of face to face trainings and meetings to be developed by ED in Georgia
  • Finalize the technical guideline for conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water based on

Postponed due to Covid-19:

  • Conduct workshop with all concerned stakeholders and donors to present the sectoral pollution abatement plans from April to September 2020
  • Conduct the Flood Risk Management Training postponed from April to September 2020
  • Selecting the Firm to install the Aquaponic System from April to May
  • Contracting of Local Company to Operate and Maintain the Wetland postponed to July 2020
  • Completion of installation of lining on CW until travel ban is lifted
  • Training to schools for Kura Box in Azerbaijan to be developed for on-line training
  • Printing and Distribution of Kura Box, Brochures and Posters to Schools and stakeholders until quarantine is lifted – June 2020
  • Launching the Social Marketing Campaigns in Georgia and Azerbaijan from April 2020 until May 2020
  • Develop technical report on the results of applying the hydrologic modelling on Shamkir Chay river and the Aragvi basin meeting planned for April 2020 now to be held virtually in May 2020
