CTA Monthly Note for April 2019

This blog post covers what the UNDP-GEF Kura II Project has accomplished during April 2019 and what are the plans for May 2019
In April we have:
- Held meetings with the relevant stakeholders, including AzerSu and NGO IDEA on the water savers mobile phone app to report water leaks and share water saving strategies
- Held meetings with International Tourism Partnership, Azerbaijan Hotels Associations and Georgia Tourism Awards to cooperate with them on 1.6 Public Private Partnership
- Held the kick off meeting of the 3.1. Agricultural Water Conservation Technologies Demonstration Project in Azerbaijan
- Held meetings about the upcoming Academic Conference of the KURA river Basin Academic Committee to be held in September 2019 in Tbilisi
- Presented 2018-2019 Progress and Work Plan and upcoming activities for 2019-2020 at the Ministry of Ecology of Azerbaijan on their panel for oversight of international projects
- Held two meetings with Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and other key stakeholder representatives to introduce a detailed information about 3.3. River Restoration project in Azerbaijan
- 7-13 April held the Study Tour to the Sava River Basin with 6 person delegations from Azerbaijan and Georgia to learn about cooperative water management in Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia
- Conducted the second block of trainings in River Ecology in both countries with the IWRM Academy
- Conducted the trainings in ISO 17025 Laboratory Standards for Water Quality in both countries with the IWRM Academy
- Conducted a fact-finding field trip to Surami, Georgia for the 3.3. River Restoration project to estimate land and need for constructed wetland, and to meet with the Mayor of the Khashuri Administrative Office
- Purchased laboratory consumables for national laboratories for Regional Working Group on Water Quality
- Collected water quality and geological data for river restoration/constructed wetlands in Azerbaijan
- Recruited International Pollution Abatement Expert
- Finalized the graphics and text for the Kura Box, translate into Azerbaijani and Georgian, and release to Ministries to share on Ministry web page for World Earth Day 22 April, and produced printed copies for the Minister of Ecology to share with stakeholders on his
- Conducted meetings on 3.3. River Restoration meeting with the International Expert, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and other key stakeholder representatives in Azerbaijan
- Launched SMM Accounts and web announcement for the 1.6 Blue Business Awards – H2Otel Awards to collect baseline attention prior to launches with the National Tourism Award Groups
- Started collection of shared water quality indicators for Regional Working Group on Water Quality
In May we will:
- Present the topic of “Water Resources and Different Aspects of Water Resources Management” at the Baku Idea Lab, local NGO platform as part of Stakeholder Awareness Raising activities
- Recruit the Mid-Term Evaluator (UNDP IRH to recruit)
- Participate at the Project Steering Committee Meeting of IW:LEARN Project in Geneva, to represent GEF International Waters Project Managers views to the stakeholders and PSC members
- Conduct 2nd block of Hydrological Modelling Training in both countries
- Arrange meeting with the International Water Supply and Demand Management Expert and Stakeholders to develop Table of Content of the Guideline of conductive use of surface and ground water resources management in both countries
- Hired the UNDP-GEF Kura II Regional Communications Manager, Ms. Sona Guliyeva
- Award 3.1. Rational Water Use in Municipal Sector RfQ in Gori, Georgia and have a kick off meeting
- Develop ToRs for National Firms to assess the main polluting sources in Azerbaijan and Georgia
- Announce RfQ for 3.3. Stress Reduction demo project in Hajigabul, Azerbaijan
- Meeting with Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture for 3.3 Stress Reduction demo project in Khashuri (and officially approve the MEPA the Constructed Wetland project in Khashuri too)
- Develop and announce ToRs for IGRAC
- IGRAC prepares regional assessment report on the groundwater in Alazani-Ganikh aquifer
- Host meeting with the International Expert Tom Stafford and Stakeholders to identify Law Enforcement in both countries
- Sampling, data collection and analysis of the Regional Working Group on Shared Water Quality Indicators in Azerbaijan and Georgia
