UNDP-GEF Kura II: Advancing IWRM Across the Kura River Basin

Environmental Flow Field Trip in Azerbaijan

The 6th monitoring campaign on the Ecological flow study for the Shamkirchay and Alijanchay Rivers basins in Azerbaijan under the UNDP-GEF Kura II Project was held on 16-17 November 2019.

The team of national experts consisted of the Environmental Flow Calculation Expert, the Hydrological Monitoring and Assessment Expert, the Physio-Chemical Monitoring and Assessment Experts, Riparian Vegetation Expert, the Socio-Economic Expert and the National Project Coordinator of the Kura II Project were traveled to the Ganja, Shamkir, Gadabey, Sheki, Oguz, Yevlakh cities to collect the thematic data and information at the selected sites  located along the Shamkirchay and Alijanchay Rivers.

The major objectives of the first monitoring and assessment campaign activity were to collect the thematic data on river ecosystems affecting the river flow regime in order to set baselines of the ecological status of different segments of both Shamkirchay and Alijanchay Rivers’ basins in Azerbaijan in the autumn. The 8 monitoring stations located in both Shamkirchay and Alijanchay Rivers (4 stations in each river) were surveyed and the water samples and biological samples were collected and analysed. The river flow measurements and the assessment of water hydrological parameters (temperature, Oxygen, Ph etc.) in the upstream and downstream parts of the Shamkichay and Alijanchay Rivers systems were conducted.
