Aquaponics is the cultivation of fish and vegetables/ plants together in a constructed, re-circulating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish wastes to plant nutrients. 
Aquaponic systems are not only eco-friendly, sustainable, provide food security and create sustainable livelihoods, but they are also commercially feasible and make good business sense—especially in a world of dwindling and escalating costs of natural resources, such as land and water.

Therefore, The UNDP-GEF Kura II project cooperated with Azerbaijani NGO “International Dialogue for Environmental Actions” for the construction of an Aquaponic system training center in Azerbaijan to promote this technology and train farmers and fishermen on how to use it in an economic and sustainable way. The water use efficiency in the aquaponic systems reached up to 90% and reduces the water losses significantly.
