UNDP-GEF Kura II: Advancing IWRM Across the Kura River Basin

Stakeholder Consultation Meeting on Environmental Flow Methodology 11 July 2017

Stakeholder Consultation Meeting on Environmental Flow Methodology took part on 11 July 2017 in Tbilisi, Georgia, as part of a series of meetings organized by UNDP/GEF Kura II project. The meeting was conducted at the USAID G4G premises, and facilitated by Mr. Ahmed A. Elseoud, Senior Capacity Building Expert UNDP/GEF Kura II project and Dr. Mary M. Matthews, Kura II Chief Technical Advisor.

The meeting reviewed the development of Environmental Flow Methodology within the framework of the USAID G4G project “Refining EF Methodology and Preparatory Work for Environmental Testing Work Plan”, as well as the principles and main stages of the holistic assessment and components of Environmental Flow, together with the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed methodology.

Different categories of environmental flow calculation methodologies and examples were also presented and discussed, such as hydrologic, hydraulic rating, habitat simulation, holistic methods, including their pros and cons. It was agreed that it is important to seize the opportunity of developing and streamlining the question of environmental flow calculations and monitoring in Georgia, with active participation and cooperation of international projects, such as UNDP/GEF Kura II, G4G and EUWI+.

It was attended by representatives from Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, National Environmental Agency, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Agriculture, Georgian universities, representatives from Georgia's civil society sector, representatives of USAID G4G program, Kura II team members. It was attended by representatives from Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, National Environmental Agency, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure, Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, universities, water companies, representative of international project, Kura II team members and experts.
